Taiwan’s two largest chipmakers have urged the government to relax restrictions on chip investments in rival China, warning that they could lose their competitive edge because of a ban on building state-of-the art production lines on the mainland.

Opposition presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou clarified yesterday that he has always supported the idea of "national unification" between Taiwan and China as well as a document backing the "one-China" principle reached by Taipei and Beijing in 1992.
