Taiwan’s two largest chipmakers have urged the government to relax restrictions on chip investments in rival China, warning that they could lose their competitive edge because of a ban on building state-of-the art production lines on the mainland.

Opposition presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou clarified yesterday that he has always supported the idea of "national unification" between Taiwan and China as well as a document backing the "one-China" principle reached by Taipei and Beijing in 1992.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The presidential candidate of Taiwan's main opposition party said Thursday he still supports the idea of a single China that includes Taiwan, despite a party decision to strike the plank from its annual platform.

There is only one China in the world. Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China's territory since antiquity. The one China principle is widely recognized by the United Nations and the overwhelming majority of its Member States.
